November Recap
Dec. 1st, 2022 09:21 pmHi everyone! Welcome to my November recap.
Movies
I’m not a huge movie person, so please don’t expect great things over here. I have most definitely not seen the most popular and good stuff but will simply decide once in a blue moon that I am ready to watch a movie and then do just that.
- Look Both Ways (2022, romantic comedy)
- The People We Hate at the Wedding (2022, comedy)
- Falling for Christmas (2022, romantic comedy)
I don’t have much to say about them besides: don’t watch number two, like, at all, number three only if you can stand rich people being totally fucking annoying and do watch number one!
Look Both Ways was quite a cute story about a woman who finds out during her last party of college whether she’s pregnant or not. We follow both possibilities with alternating scenes and of course both of them turn out to be okay. She’s also a 2D animator so that was very much fun for me to see although I’m not sure how many animators these film makers have seen before..
Shows
I am however much more of a tv show watcher, although maybe not this month.
- Little Women (2022, k-drama, mystery, family drama)
- Heartbreak High (2022, comedy drama)
- Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022, romance, coming-of-age)
I only watched two episodes each of Little Women and Heartbreak High, as well as a couple more episodes of Twenty-Five Twenty-One.
Little Women is far too scary for me. A friend gave me a full list of trigger warnings and fucking hell. I did not expect that going in so I was waiting for the fun to start but it did not! It just got more miserable. Maybe I’ll continue at a different point but not right now.
Heartbreak High was fun and inconsequential so far, so I will probably continue watching it soon. My media consumption often falls into the category of easy to digest and fun to watch so no surprises here.
I had watched the first episode of Twenty-Five Twenty-One quite a while ago but ended up watching more on a train trip this month and got hooked! I found the main character quite unbearable in the first episode, but she’s been growing on me. Will definitely continue watching this one too.
Books
- Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (2022, fantasy)
- On a Sunbeam by Tillie Walden (2022, graphic novel, science fiction)
I had read exactly zero books in October so I was in desperate need for some - you guessed it - easy to digest and fun books! I’m sad that I didn’t read more than that but I am quite literally in the middle of six books… It took a long time to find something that stuck and excited me enough to keep reading.
Legends & Lattes was my final effort in finding a book I would like and it was so good! Easy to read, super cosy with a little bit of stake, such a cute found family and a queer romance. What more could you want! Thimble is my little guy, whom I love very much. If the coffee shop in this book would be around the corner, I’d live there, but alas.
I have read a couple of Tillie Walden’s books before and On a Sunbeam was actually a re-read. I had planned to take part in a read-athon during November but this was the only book I got around to reading. Waldens art is breathtaking and this story in particular is so heartfelt and magical. She packs so much of a punch in this tome of a book. And again it’s about found family, about a queer romance, about not knowing what to do with your live and about a cat. What more could you want! x2
Fic
Just for fun I ended up tracking all my fanfic reading this month. I read a whooping 150k words of fic! I’m sure this isn’t a lot for other people or maybe it is. I don’t really care because I really just wanted to know and wanted to keep track so that I can actually recommend stuff!
Some favorites from this month:
- i said i’m done by sharpa (svt, seungcheol/jeonghan)
- stop me if you've heard this one before by liebchen (svt, wonwoo/jeonghan/mingyu)
- Anomaly Counter by yopumpkinhead (murderbot diaries)
- Turns out I am sentimental after all by ahopeinthenight (txt, beomgyu/soobin)
Podcasts
And last but most certainly not least: I have listened to so, SO much of Fic Clique this month. No really, I listened to 30 episodes this month alone. That’s half of all their episodes.
So if you didn’t know, Fic Clique is a podcast where every episode each one of the hosts - Nic, Brenna and Reid - brings a fic to discuss. I can’t put it into nice words but here’s a list of things I love about this podcast: the deep-dive into fics whether it’s the writing, the narration style or the recurring themes; the constant mentions of Hamlet (I’m looking at you, Nic) and the resulting exasperated sighs; the screaming about how good this fic was; the gourdless-ness; the rating system; the “re-negotiating of a relationship because both of you changed”; Reid’s video game corner; Brenna’s obsession with making houses and homes!! There’s so much to love here. In particular I like how the hosts treat fanfiction with so much earnestness and appreciation. All in all it’s just another artform! I have heard so many people making fun of fic writers and have been hesitant to talk to people in my life about my writing as well. This podcast makes me feel like I am in a safe space where I can scream about my little blorbos and my weird interests freely. Nic, Brenna and Reid have unknowingly spent so much of this month with me. I felt like a little mouse listening in to their conversations and they were holding my hand while I got on with stupid life stuff like washing the dishes.
Go listen to Fic Clique wherever you get your podcasts. Seriously, you won’t regret it.
Thanks for reading until here! What have y'all been up to in November?
