November Recap
Dec. 1st, 2023 11:44 pmWelcome to my November recap where I only watched one show, tortured myself with Iron Flame and generally don’t know how this month is already over.
Loki Season 2 (2023, action)
Trying to fix what’s broken is hard. Hope is hard. I’m sorry I didn’t sign up for having EMOTIONS!? In general I had a rough time with the first three episodes but liked how they tied this story up. However, I do have opinions on how to fix the ending in a fanfic way that would be much MUCH more devastating. So… :)
To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers (2019, sci-fi)
I love everything Becky Chambers writes and this was no exception! If you want to check out her work, this one is a perfect novella length example of cosy sci-fi, found family, different depictions of love, queer characters and just such a hopeful look into the future despite hardships.
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (2021, sci-fi)
A violinist makes a deal with the devil, she has to deliver seven souls of other violin players to be able to play again herself. In that process she falls in love with an alien who owns a donut shop and gives a home to a trans teen who ran away from home. This one was a bit messy at times but oh I loved how everything turned out. Please watch out for yourself though, this one deals heavily with Racism and Transphobia.
Kim Reaper: Grim Beginnings + Vampire Island by Sarah Graley (2018/2019, fantasy graphic novel)
I finally got a library card from my local library and am surprised at how good the selection of English books is! These looked cute and easy to read and that’s really all there’s to say about them. I wouldn’t tell you to spend money on them (especially the dialogue is very clunky) but as a library pick this was a good use of a Sunday morning.
System Collapse by Martha Wells (2023, sci-fi)
I LOVE MURDERBOT, especially when murderbot and art are arguing with each other. This was lovely, but I would’ve hoped for it to go more into what happened at the end of network effect and what that means for murderbot. Nonetheless, I am excited for more murderbot and art adventures.
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske (2021, historical/fantasy)
I am always a bit sceptical about historical novels because I am reading in my second language and that’s not easy, people! But OH DAMN. I really liked how well the plot and the romance were balanced (it got a bit messy at the end but otherwise it was great) and how we sprang right into the action. I loooove Robin and Edwin!! Robin is SUCH a darling romantic. Also I absolutely read the two middle smut scenes while sitting on a sofa next to my mom, trying to keep a straight face. I felt completely fine.
Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros(2023, fantasy)
First of all, we do not support people in this household that support active genocide. Secondly, I dnf-ed this at 66% because I just couldn’t do it anymore. But I feel like I have read enough to be allowed an opinion, so here goes nothing: Violet got on my nerves from the first page. The way she kept blaming herself for every fucking thing in the world and not trusting Xaden despite him doing everything he reasonably could! This one felt much more YA in the general sense and then we’ve got the most disgustingly baffling sex scenes sprinkled in?! What is wrong with straight people, honestly… There was also just so much going on plot wise but nothing over-arching that would’ve kept me going to the end of the book? It was so messy, badly edited and just in general bad. Just no.
-Hospitality by ninamonday(svt, mingyu/jeonghan)
THIS ONE IS FUCKING INSANE. Ninamonday does it yet AGAIN.
-New Perspectives by merryofsoul (skz, felix/jeongin)
I mean I love every one of Veronica’s fics, but the airport scene is SOOOO cute, I will forever love sleepy cuddly Felix.
I just noticed that I've been doing these recaps for a year now! Happy anniversary!
