August + September Recap
Oct. 13th, 2023 10:56 pmHello from a corpse on the sofa! I got covid after coming back from a trip, but have my August and September Recap anyways. I’m gonna be quick because my brain is simply not really online.
Good Omens Season 2 (2023, fantasy)
What a good thing that I didn’t have to remember the first season to watch this! Lovely and funny, I had a great time with them.
King the Land (2023, romance)
Conflicted about this one, I didn’t like that the rich male lead never fully “got” that he can’t just throw money at things to solve them, but the main couple was extremely cute. Usually I really struggle with finishing kdramas after the couple got together but these two were so friggin adorable together, it was worth it.
One Piece (2023, action/fantasy)
I mean- if you haven’t watched this yet, don’t walk, run! This is how you sell anime to a wide audience. My blorbos! I had a great time.
Red, White and Royal Blue (2023, romance)
It was fine. Obviously the book was better, simply because it had more time to go deep and develop not only the main relationship but also their surroundings, which fell flat in the movie.
Barbie (2023, comedy)
I had a great time! (And have nothing else to say that hasn’t been said before.)
Past Lives (2023, drama/romance)
Hmmmm. This did not give me fully what I wanted, but it was good nonetheless! Very nice quiet and emotional vibes.
Nimona (2023, adventure/fantasy)
Nimona was simply delightful, I would like to adopt them. I already want to watch this again - the visuals! the jokes! the story! All great.
Her (2013, sci-fi/romance)
Movie club with H pick! We were both super impressed with Joaquin Phoenix’s acting since most of the movie is just his face as he is interacting (and falling in love) with his smart operating system. What a feat to make that interesting!
Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin (2016, literary)
A quiet book, not good, not bad. I was surprised that this is originally written in French, not Korean!
Remote Control by Nnedi Okorafor (2021, sci-fi)
I liked the concept and 90% of the story, but I fully did not get the ending. I even re-listened to the last half hour and still came up short??? I don’t know.
The Carrying: Poems by Ada Limón (2018, poetry)
Ada Limón has been recommended so widely, but for some reason I didn’t deeply connect with any of the poems in this collection. There were many I liked, still, and I will try again!
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine (2023, sci-fi)
WOWEEEE. MWOW! So much politics but perfectly balanced with action. I did not expect [redacted] to happen!!!! Anyways, what a lovely cast of characters again. I just wished it would be less hard to pronounce all the worldbuild-y things. I still can’t pronounce Teixcalaan, not even in my head.
Nimona by ND Stevenson (2015, graphic novel/fantasy)
Nimona is my new favourite child. I think I liked the movie more, because Nimona’s shape shifting was able to shine so much more, but both versions of the story were delightful.
Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price (2021, nonfiction)
Very accessible nonfiction about how we should all chill out a bit more. It’s good to get reminders like this once in a while and I learned a couple new things too!
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty (2023, historical fantasy)
This was a classic case of me having fun while reading the book but never really picking it up? I think it was because the chapters were all relatively self-contained in the beginning so there was no “incentive” to keep reading? The second half got SO much more wild though. I am definitely interested in reading the next books in the series.
The Book of Delights by Ross Gay (2019, essays)
This was not for me. I kept hoping with each essay, but nope. Such long sentences and he kept jumping from topic to topic even within one (short!) essay. :(
Are you sick yet of me recommending fic by the same authors all the time? Well, sucks to be you, here are two by some favourite people!!
- Super Shy by ninamonday (svt, wonwoo/hoshi)
- when I get older (I’m gonna be there to hold him) by merryofsoul (skz, hyunjin/jeongin)
I cried so much reading the second, and I couldn’t even tell you why. Just friends and found family and LOVE! Veronica simply writes the best stuff. <3
