May + June Recap

Hi hi! I am coming to you with another two month wrap up. Hope you’re doing well!
In Bruges (2008, crime/comedy)
Similar to Banshees of Inisherin simply not my kind of humor. Although it was very fun to guess plot points in advance since they were actually teased earlier. Movies these days don’t do that anymore.
Frozen (2013, animation)
This was H’s pic, which surprised me and then he revealed that he had never seen this movie?! Getting to witness his live reactions was the best part of the evening for sure - he thought that “Let It Go” was just a popular radio song by Adele or someone like that?? Absolutely flabbergasting.
Across the Spiderverse (2023, animation/adventure)
UGH, this was so good. The wait was worth it, the wait for the next (last?) movie will be worth it. I love my spider kids and will definitely need to find some good fic to get me through this wait time.
The Kardashians (2022, reality tv)
Sometimes if me and H can’t bother with watching a movie, we watch at most two episodes of The Kardashians. We complain the whole time but still do it. Utterly fascinating and equally enraging.
The Ultimatum: Queer Love (2023, reality tv)
Absolutely bonkers, completely wild and also surprisingly heart-felt and real. I must say this is the best reality tv show I have watched so far, especially because we got so much insight into these people’s (messy) relationships. Seeing abuse happening on screen though - I am not sure it was the right choice to keep these scenes in like that without any kind of acknowledgement for it.
Primo (2023, sitcom)
A very fun and easy to watch teenage drama. Rafa has five uncles and they’re all incredibly stupid, which is their appeal! I would’ve loved to get to see more of him and his friends, so I hope there will be another season.
Radical Self-Care by Svenja Gräfen (2021, feminism/self help)
This was the pic for a local feminist book club and… we all didn’t particularly like it. It covers too many topics and doesn’t go into detail. This is the perfect book for someone who has never heard about self-care and community care and feminism in relation to those.. but who hasn’t?
Happy Place by Emily Henry (2023, romance)
Sadly I fell into the camp of people who didn’t quite like this. I found the group of friends extremely pretentious and annoying, there were so many opportunities for the main couple to actually talk with each other but alas they didn’t. I also didn’t like how Wyn’s depression was handled. Not a bad read per-se but definitely not my fav.
When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities by Chen Chen (2017, poetry)
Brought this whole collection because I really like this poem but didn’t find many others that worked for me, sadly.
Tower by Bae Myung-hoon (2009, sci-fi/short stories)
VERY cool book of connected short stories that all take place in this huge skyscraper that is its own country. Super fascinating how much the author thought about logistics - within the building on topics like transportation, as well as on political issues outside the building. Would highly recommend!
Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda (2022, literary/horror)
Interesting book, but I feel like it was trying to tell me this huge thing that I simply didn’t get. Maybe too much ~literature~ for my usual taste? It’s not like I had a bad time reading this, but it also didn’t blow me away, you know?
This is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar (2019, sapphic sci-fi)
Yes, this totally got back on my radar because of THAT tweet and then it fell into my hand in the bookstore, so of course I had to buy it. I really liked it even though I am pretty sure I didn’t understand everything - which is a feeling I often have with poetry. But then a couple of lines are so good that struggling through the harder parts is worth it. Queer love, romantic letters, time traveling! What more could you want!?
Feelings: A Story in Seasons by Manjit Thapp (2021, non fiction/graphic novel)
A very lovely book to remind myself that we are in fact only animals that are affected by the seasons and don’t have to feel the same way (preferably good, if not great) the whole year round. Lovely art style as well; would make a great gift, I think.
The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff (2023, literary fiction)
If you read one book from this list, make it this one! SO GOOD. I absolutely ate this up and will gladly monologue about it. Have already lent this to a new friend. Check the content warnings and then read it, read it, read it.
307k of fic over these two months even though I haven’t read any these last two weeks. It comes in phases for me at the moment!
Here are some favs:
- give me a tempest by Klavier (svt, mingyu/minghao)
- Laundry and Taxes by merryofsoul (skz, minho/changbin)
- not to me / not if it’s you by averytree (skz, jisung/minho)
- part time soulmate (full time problem) by ksmwifeguy (skz, seungmin/minho)
- love starved (i'll be there to feed it) by changbinz(skz, minho/changbin)
